OPTICAL MICROSCOPE IMAGE
MIT DEPT. OF MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING MICROSCOPE IMAGE CONTEST
JANUARY 2026
JANUARY 2026
I used an Olympus DSX-1000 Digital Optical Microscope to capture a silicon wafer (chip) patterned with aluminum squares. When zoomed out, the different sized squares create a grayscale effect that makes an image.
This image won best optical microscope image at MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) Breakerspace Image Contest. The Breakerspace is a materials lab open to use by all undergraduates at MIT, which is where I took this photo.
I made this chip as part of a tour of MIT's Nano Lab.
